Yoshua Okón
About the Speaker
YOSHUA OKÓN is an artist born and based in Mexico City. His work, are based on sociological experiments executed for the camera, where he blends staged situations, documentation and improvisation and questions habitual perceptions of reality and truth, selfhood and morality. In 2002, he received an MFA from UCLA with a Fulbright Scholarship. His solo shows exhibitions include: Yoshua Okón: Collateral, MUAC, Mexico City and Amparo Museum, Puebla; Yoshua Okón, Ghebaly Gallery, LA; Yoshua Okón: In the Land of Ownership, ASAKUSA, Tokio; Saló Island, UC Irvine, Irvine; Piovra, Kaufmann Repetto, Milan; Poulpe, Mor Charpentier, Paris; Octopus, Cornerhouse, Manchester and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles and SUBTITLE, Städtische Kunsthalle, Munich. His work is included in the collections of Tate Modern, Hammer Museum, LACMA, Colección Jumex and MUAC, among others.
About the Moderator
NOOR ALÉ is the Assistant Curator/Registrar at the MacLaren Art Centre, Barrie. Prior to joining the MacLaren, she served as Curatorial Research Assistant for the exhibition Frontera: Views of the US-Mexico Border at the Canadian Photography Institute, National Gallery of Canada. She has contributed to curatorial and public programs at the Abu Dhabi Project, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY; Art Dubai; and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto. She holds an MA in Art History from The Courtauld Institute of Art, London and a BA in Art History from the University of Guelph.Since 2016, she has shared a collaborative curatorial practice with Claudia Mattos. They are the founders of AXIS, a curatorial laboratory devoted to socially-engaged projects that examine global contemporary art. In late 2019, they participated in the Shanghai Curators Lab, a curatorial residency program organized by the Shanghai Academy of Fine Art, Shanghai International Art City Research Institute, and Power Station of Art.
