Four Moments in Latin(o) American Art
Seeking to expand definitions of both American and Latin American art, this presentation explores four different historic moments through the work of living artists. The history of interest in Latin American in New York art dates to the late 1930s, where some of the earliest exhibitions of “Latin American Art” were displayed. 30 years later, El Museo del Barrio became the country’s first museum dedicated to the study and display of Latin American Art. Focusing on the work of living artists and traditions, El Museo from the beginning sought to create a space for artists who were excluded from other New York institutions. Through the work of four artists representing a variety of concerns, we can explore the contribution of Latino American artists to the contemporary history of American Art.
